Windmill Lodges – a 5-Star Holiday Experience

At Windmill Lodges we have one 5-star holiday log cabin as well as a host of other four-star lodges at our site in the heart of the Suffolk countryside. Here we look at who provides these independent ratings, the criteria they use, and why it means you can be sure of a top-quality stay with us.

The star rating is provided by VisitEngland, the official tourist board for this country. Before 1999 it was known as the English Tourist Board and between 1999 and 2009 as the English Tourism Council. In 2003 it merged with the British Tourist Authority and became VisitBritain, before it became a separate body six years later.

VisitEngland’s stated mission is to “build England’s tourism product, raise Britain’s profile worldwide, increase the volume and value of tourism exports and develop England and Britain’s visitor economy”.

How Does It Reach Its Rankings?

VisitEngland has almost 100 assessors who visit more than 30,000 tourist accommodation businesses across the country. Their job is to check the level of services and facilities on offer at each one before determining its ranking, from one star up to the highest ranking of five stars.

Their inspection covers all aspects of the business, from the initial booking to the checking-out procedure. One of the most important elements of any visit is the level of cleanliness which is maintained at the premises.

Once an assessor has agreed the category their business falls under with the owners, they review the services offered within that scheme and award a quality score. Self-catering properties like our own receive a pre-appointed day visit; the procedure is slightly different for hotels, B & Bs and holiday parks (most receive an unannounced ‘mystery shopper’ style visit and it can include an overnight stay).

5-Star Holiday Log Cabin Holidays at Windmill Lodges

Kingfisher Lodge is the jewel in Windmill Lodges’ crown – our log cabin has been awarded five stars by VisitEngland. It can sleep four adults plus one child under 16 (a folding guest bed is available for them at a small extra charge).

It has two bedrooms, one with a king-size bed and ensuite facilities, and the other with a double bed. Its unique selling points include the infra-red sauna, the kitchen (there’s a Range cooker along with all the other facilities), and comfortable living room with a Smart TV.

In short, it’s got everything you need for a luxury holiday.

Our 4-Star Holiday Log Cabins

Our remaining lodges, which are all 4-star, also have to reach a very high standard to be awarded that ranking by VisitEngland. They have either one, two or three bedrooms (Chaffinch Lodge is our one-bedroom lodge and is very popular with couples) and have plenty of high-quality facilities – whether it’s a fully equipped kitchen, a comfortable lounge with a TV & DVD player, a fireplace and under-floor heating, as well as a bathroom and – another of our unique selling points – your own private hot tub.

Two of our lodges – Woodpecker and Wagtail – are pet-friendly so you can bring your dog on holiday as well.

And don’t forget that all our guests can use the communal facilities, which can be found in The Hut. This includes laundry facilities, as well as a selection of books and board games. You can also use our swimming pool, which is open during the summer months.
